AN Albanvale man has been fined by the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court after he pleaded guilty to illegally keeping a wedge-tailed eagle in a cage.

The 42-year-old man has been ordered to pay a $400 fine to the Australasian Raptor Association.

He has also been ordered to pay the costs of the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) but no conviction has been recorded against him.

DEPI wildlife officer Sam Moore said the eagle was found in a ‘very small cage’ at the man’s home in July last year.

“This fine is a reminder to anyone who wants to keep protected wildlife that it can only be done with the appropriate licences required under the Wildlife Act,” Ms Moore said.

Anyone aware of a wildlife-related crime can contact the DEPI on 136 186.
