Horse Rescue: Inspiring Stories of Second-Chance Horses and the Lives They Changed- by Joanne Schoenwald, Feb 2015

horse rescueSynopsis

‘What brings me joy are the inspiring, goose-bumping, enlightening rescue stories of exhilarating triumph, quiet meditative wisdom, life-changing moments and powerful self-healing.’ Horses are powerful beyond their physical measures. Through their unique bond to people, horses have the ability to heal, teach, and change lives. A person might rescue a horse, but so often it ends up being the other way around. And sometimes the deepest transformations come when we least expect them. Meet Sue Spence, who rescued little Larry, a pony that helped her through the stages of breast cancer. There’s Rebel Morrow, whose journey to the Athens Olympics with her rescued horse, Groover, is nothing short of miraculous. And there’s Michael Williams, in and out of prison for twelve years and finally seeing some light through the Horses for Hope program. These and a dozen other rescuers celebrate the special bonds they’ve formed, and share what they have learned from their amazing equine companions.

The Argument For Banning Horse Carriages

Voices_horse photo cu_fmt1Written by Elizabeth Fore on May 8, 2014

It’s revealing that your editorial has seen fit to scold animal activists and hold them up to unrealistic and silly white glove standards, while ignoring the vicious lies of the carriage trade. By focusing on style over substance, you are not fulfilling your journalistic duties of bringing the truth to the public.

Indy & MandyHorse Welfare Inc. New South Wales, Australia

Horse welfare Inc is a registered tax concession charity and deductible gift recipient with fundraising approval from the OLGR. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate, re-educate and rehouse horses in need. We are located in Glen Oak in the Hunter Valley in NSW.

There are many reasons a horse may find its way to us. Some are rescued from doggers yards on their last chance ticket. Others come from homes where their owners were simply not educated appropriately in the care or management of horses. Or, deceased estates with no other options. And sadly, some do come from backgrounds of complete neglect.

Label if Horses are used in Pet Food

Ongoing Petition

To:  Pet food industry of AustraliaWe are calling on the pet food industry in Australia to label if they are using horse meat in their pet foods. Currently there is no requirement that the ingredients of pet food list if horses are used (simply being listed as “animal by-products”). Horses in Australia are subjected to horrendous conditions in the lead-up to being slaughtered. It is not the case that just the sick and old horses end up being pet food, horses in their prime and even young foals are being killed and canned. We wish to be able to make the choice ourselves whether we buy a product that has horse meat in it for our animals. We would call on those companies who have made an ethical decision to not use horses in their products to state so on their labels that they are “HORSE SAFE”. And if a company does decide that it is acceptable to use horse meat in their products they should have the courage to say they do in their ingredients.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

About Charlie’s Angels

Sometimes, there are moments in life when you are just called to act and act quickly. Charlie’s rescue was one of those moments. His story has touched people so deeply, that this organisation was initiated and named in his honour.

Mission Statement

  • Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue Inc. rescues and rehabilitates abused, neglected, abandoned and homeless horses in order to improve their lives.
  • Through the action of its works, Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue Inc. provides community education about horse care and welfare issues.
  • Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue Inc. believes that every life is valuable.

Purpose

Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation (endorsed as a deductible gift recipient) whose purpose is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected, abandoned and homeless horses in order to improve their lives. Charlie’s Angels Horse Rescue Inc. then finds permanent “forever” homes for these horses through its adoption schemed. The organisation undertakes community education as an essential part of its role in addressing welfare issues.

In 2010, we will begin tackling the root causes of the problem of horse slaughter in Australia. We’ll continue to rescue horses, but unless we can bring some changes to the laws and systems that support the cycle of horse slaughter, we’re barely touching the surface. For every horse we save, there’s 100,000 more waiting to take its place. We don’t think that’s good enough, so we’ll be campaigning for change.
