Animal Sheltering Humane Society of United States is a program of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal protection organization. The HSUS works closely with local animal care organizations, shelters, and animal control agencies in a variety of ways. We provide guidelines, recommendations, and advice on shelter operations, policies, and procedures. We publish our award-winning bimonthly magazine, Animal Sheltering, which features information about new and innovative programs, materials, and resources. The HSUS also hosts the premier international educational conference and trade show for animal sheltering professionals, Animal Care Expo.

Each day, members of our staff assist animal shelter administrators and employees, veterinarians, government officials, and members of the public with questions and concerns about sheltering issues, from new ways to promote adoptions to obtaining funding and community support. The HSUS also provides assistance to individuals looking to help animals in their communities by organizing local humane organizations and to those looking to help existing groups and agencies improve their operations and programs. We offer these dedicated individuals a wealth of publications and training opportunities, along with the personal guidance of our staff.

Our state offices extend The HSUS’s national programs into the community and serve the needs of local constituents. When you want to contact The HSUS with a local issue, the best place to start is your regional office. These offices play an indispensable role in improving the quality of local animal care and control programs; they do so through shelter visits and by providing resources to local humane organizations and animal shelters. The state offices host workshops and presentations to further educate communities, law-enforcement agencies, veterinarians, and animal care and control professionals.

We also have a dedicated staff of specialists who can answer any questions you have that cannot be found on the website.  If you can’t find what you’re looking for in the Resource Library, under one of our Programs and Services, or through our comprehensive search engine, please contact us.
